Benefits of Yoga for the Mind and Body

Highlights from the interview:

Toni believes in encouraging and embracing the idea of practicing yoga with the body that you have, no need to have the perfect, thin physique we all see associated with yoga everywhere you look online! It is more about becoming comfortable with your level of discomfort as you stretch your body and breathe.

Hatha yoga is a type of yoga that holds a pose whereas Yoga Nidra is a series of guided meditation that incorporates breath and visualization. Most of us shallow breathe through our days but full breathe breathing helps to calm the vagus nerve which connects the brain and the body. Calming the vagus nerve can also lower the heart rate.

Yoga Nidra helps to train the body and mind in order to get better sleep. It is said that 45 minutes of Yoga Nidra is the equivalent of 3 hours of sleep. Because sleep is so important, think of it like the dishwasher for the brain, so focus on tips that can help provide a good night’s rest.

Sleep hygiene tips can be helpful in achieving better sleep. For example, keeping the sleeping area (thought of as your sleep sanctuary) cool, dark, free of work/electronic distractions can all be important. Making it a cool area involves things like using a fan, wearing pajamas that are cool or wick away moisture, and using cool sheets and pillows.

Vision boards are often thought of as a collage of pictures of our goals. In creating one, it can be better to observe your body and reactions to photos and only choose those that speak to you at that moment. Then it becomes a heart centered vision board of things you want to create in your life. From the board, Toni encourages journaling and even creating a To Do list to further help actualize the contents of the board.
